Position opening: Project Scientist
The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior has an opening in the Project Scientist Series.
A Project Scientist position is available in the Patterson lab in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. The successful applicant will lead a newly funded project to investigate the association and contribution of smoking and/or vaping to genomics, EEG and evoked potential measures of inhibitory function, and to neurocognitive ability in bipolar disorder. Individuals with psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder smoke significantly more than individuals without these disorders, but the neurobiological and behavioral underpinnings of this nicotine dependence are largely unknown. The goal of this research is to enable the detection of genomic, sensory gating and cognitive markers to provide a more precise understanding of the mechanisms underlying nicotine use in BD, as well as identify potential targets for nicotine cessation and provide information about the neuroscience of bipolar disorder and nicotine addiction. The successful applicant will also be involved with a second funded study comparing electrophysiological markers in fraternal and identical twins.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a PhD with research experience relevant to our research and be an individual who can work both independently and within a collaborative team environment of researchers and students. Preference will be given to candidates with some knowledge about psychiatric disorders, experience performing and analyzing EEG, clinical recruitment skills, statistical expertise, and familiarity with MATLAB. Experience performing molecular biology techniques (e.g., nucleic acid extractions, sequencing library preparation, PCR) and/or bioinformatics would be a plus. The position is full time and salary will be based on experience and University guidelines for the Project Scientist Series.
