The out of memory messages you are seing are not due to actual lack of physical RAM space but the amount of RAM you would need to address is larger than a 32 bit addressing system can handle. To be able to open and use such large files in Matlab, you need to run 64 bit version of Matlab. On Linux and Windows it means that you also need to run 64bit version of the operating system. On Mac OS X you can run 64 bit application in parallel with 32 bit ones. I have been using 64 bit Matlab and EEGLab on Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 without issues. With enough RAM I was able to have several 2+ GB recordings open in parallel.
