This PhD project aims to confirm the translational value of a social cognitive predictor of effective everyday communication and hearing aid usage/satisfaction in younger and older populations with hearing difficulties. </span></font><font face="Segoe UI,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" size="1"><span style="font-size: 13px; "><br>

The research combines behavioural, audiological, and EEG experiments on language processing with neuropsychological assessment of individual social cognitive functioning in older and younger adults with and without hearing loss. Through this innovative combination
of methods the research will open up possibilities for direct application in a variety of populations with deficits in social function and communication difficulties, such as Asperger’s Syndrome or ADHD. </span></font><font face="Segoe UI,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" size="1"><span style="font-size: 13px; "><br>

The project will involve collaboration with Phonak, a Swiss world-leader in designing hearing devices with the aim of developing a diagnostic test based on the results of the experiments conducted on speech comprehension and social function. These diagnostic
tests will serve as a predicting factor for hearing aid usage and satisfaction. The test will be piloted in a group of first-time hearing aid users to establish the effect of individual social cognitive skills on hearing aid usage and satisfaction. </span></font><font face="Segoe UI,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" size="1"><span style="font-size: 13px; "><br>

This 4-year studentship provides full support for tuition fees, all associated research costs and an annual tax-free stipend at minimum Research Council rates (£13, 590 in 2011). The project is due to commence October 2012 and is open to UK/EU nationals only
