The 'pack' command is only useful to reorganize fragmented memory.
AFAIK it is nothing such as a garbage collector.

Matlab uses all system memory, this includes swap space. There exists
variables under /sys/ to control the swap behaviour of linux kernels
(AFAIK bdflush).

I think the workaround should be to split your files in early stage of
processing and to use batch scripts if possible. The best solution is
to increase your systems memory.
