Darren,

The paper I sent before (Ferree TC, 2006, Spherical Splines and Average
Referencing in Scalp Electroencephalography, Brain Topography)
elaborates the idea in the Junghofer paper that Jeff just mentioned.

Including the reference electrode is not relevant when you
compute spline-based average reference - that is a small
refinement of the standard electrode-based average reference.
When computing the splines, you just use the c0 term from
the spline fit.
