The Department of Neurology at Ghent University (Belgium) is seeking to
fill two PhD positions in preclinical epilepsy research and small animal
functional imaging. The fellows will join a research project situated in
the context of an interdisciplinary research partnership between the
Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Neurophysiology, Neurobiology
and Neuropsychology (LCEN3, headed by Prof. dr. Paul Boon) and the
INFINITY lab (http://www.infinityugent.be ; headed by Prof dr. Chris
Vanhove )on imaging and modulating abnormal brain networks in the
epileptic rodent brain.
This preclinical research project includes small animal functional
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), video-EEG monitoring, intracranial
electrophysiology, signal analysis, deep brain stimulation (DBS), drug
therapy, chemogenetics (DREADDs) and optogenetics in rodent models for
epilepsy.*Applicants should have a background in biomedical sciences,
biomedical engineering or related discipline and have a strong interest
in the domain of animal research, electrophysiology and/or fMRI data
analysis**. Applicants should be collaborative, dynamic persons who like
to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. Applicants should
have good knowledge of the English language and good communication
skills (written and oral). Candidates will be selected based on
excellent study results, motivation, good scientific reasoning and
recommendation letters by previous supervisors. *
The department of Neurology of Ghent University and INFINITY lab offers
access to several preclinical models for epilepsy research and several
preclinical research techniques, including state-of-the-art /in vivo/
neuroimaging techniques (small animal fMRI, µPET, µSPECT, µCT, optical
imaging), stereotactic neurosurgery, /in vivo /and/in vitro/
neurophysiological recording and neurostimulation techniques, /in vivo/
(stem) cell and gene therapy (including optogenetics and chemogenetics).
Both PhD positions will be open for four years with starting date
between May 2017 and October 2017.
Interested candidates should send a CV, motivation letter, and two
reference letters to this email address: Robrecht.Raedt at ugent.be
