US DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is looking for a highly motivated
postdoctoral fellow with background in analytical fields, generally
speaking, to advance methodological approaches in social cognitive
neuroscience and understand human-human and human-AI interactions. This
research, with both computational and experimental aspects, makes use of a
variety of physiological system sensors (including EEG and fNIRS) and other
metrics to infer individual and heterogeneous “teaming states”. The
research also proposes to investigate the use of brain stimulation to
optimize dyadic (pair of individuals as well as pair of individual and AI)
decision making performance.

The candidate may come from a variety of disciplines, to add to an already
highly distributed and multi-disciplinary team that includes physicists,
neuroscientists, engineers, and social scientists. An ideal candidate will
have strong analytical skills with relevant research expertise in
neuroscience. Experience in machine learning will be a plus. The successful
candidate will have a crucial role in linking the ARL team with
experimental and computational research at the Human Neuroscience
Laboratory at UC Irvine (Ramesh Srinivasan, PI). Further details on the
positions are described below. Interested candidates should contact Dr.
Javier Garcia (Javier.o.garcia.civ at army.mil) and Prof. Ramesh Srinivasan (
r.srinivasan at uci.edu) along with the required documents (see below).

Project description:

In today’s increasingly complex environments across a variety of spatial
and temporal scales, humans and technology must be seamlessly fused,
augmenting human teams extensively to operate not only adaptively but also
symbiotically. There are significant challenges to this seamless fusion of
humans with technology. At the core of these challenges is finding and
exploring novel ways in understanding the foundational process that allows
the brain to store and analyze information and consequently decide and
execute an action. While neuroscientists have made great strides in human
and non-human animal experimentation to understand how elements of the
brain coalesce to form thoughts and act, there is still an open question to
how this process may inform future AI or which processes may be accessed
for technological intervention and augmentation. We are seeking
self-motivated independent thinkers to bring novel ideas and expertise to
these challenges.

Benefits: Yearly salary range is between USD 87,000 and 94,000 depending on
the location + medical insurance.

Desired qualifications:

   -

PhD in systems, cognitive, or computational neuroscience, or in any
analytical field including physics, electrical engineering, computer
   science, and statistics.
   -

   Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python.
   -

The researcher will need to collaborate with team members outside their
immediate discipline so comfort with exploring and learning new fields of
study is a must while simultaneously leading independent research.
   -

Previous experience in physiological signal processing and/or machine
   learning will be a plus.
   -

Previous experience in complex systems approaches, control systems
engineering, topological data analysis, networks, or modeling and
   simulation will be desirable.

Required documents:

   -

CV and informational materials on past research experience
   -

Cover letter including a short paragraph describing how your expertise
and computational background is suited to tackle the above challenge(s)
   -

Any additional information that you find relevant.
