Dear eeglablist and eeglabnews members,

We are planning to submit (on Mar. 5) a renewal proposal to NIH to support
unbroken maintenance and continued development of the EEGLAB environment.
Our proposal will detail three major aims:

The first is to strengthen the EEGLAB core, adding support at the STUDY
level for connectivity measures and improved source localization
capabilities including MR-based and electrode-position based source imaging
and improved 3-D brain source graphics, beamforming approaches to source
identification, plus improved memory use and GPU/cloud computing support,
and continued support for a fully functional and free compiled version of
EEGLAB.

Our second is to further emphasize support for development and maintenance
of externally developed tools and toolboxes that interface with EEGLAB.
Important examples of these include, BCILAB, SIFT, ERPLAB, NFT, Fieldtrip,
MoBILAB, and LIMO. This will include improved function testing tools. We
will allocate resources to support interfacing new toolboxes to work
directly with EEGLAB studies, and will develop tools to export results to
and from advanced statistics packages R, SPSS and Statistica.

Our third aim is to continue to encourage and develop the EEGLAB user and
developer community with a new EEGLAB forum website and chatroom, an ever
more extensive Online EEGLAB Workshop, and addition of a new open-source
lab and public database system, HeadIT, that interacts directly with EEGLAB.
*
**For this renewal to succeed, we want and need to include your letters of
support!*

Below we provide a possible letter guide - though your letter writing
creativity may impress reviewers still more! Letters from users and from
laboratory PIs are both appreciated (letters from NIH grant holders are
especially welcome!)

Please send *by March 3rd*, as pdf (institutional letterhead appreciated)
or by email a letter of support either by email (reply) or fax (858)
458-1847. <%28858%29%20458-1847>

We thank you again for your support and for your interest in EEGLAB.

*Sample support letter text:*

Drs. Makeig and Delorme,

I am writing to -------- support your NIH application for funding continued
development of your open-source packages for electrophysiological data
analysis, EEGLAB and associated toolboxes.

I [and my associates----] have been using EEGLAB in [my|our] research at
 ----------------------
on ------------------ for ---------------- years and find it
-------------------------.

It is of -------- value in our funded research projects (--- *project
identifiers* -------),
in particular because -----------.

We have published results obtained using this toolbox in -----[*journal
names*]-------.

My students and I have also found EEGLAB to be valuable for
-----------------.

I hope that the open source development model you are promoting for EEGLAB
results in continued development of cognitive neuroscience software
including --------------------.

I am particularly interested in your proposed plan to ------- *[here,
select items below or mention other points]*

   - improve EEGLAB source localization functions and visualization,
   - add support at the STUDY level for computing connectivity measures,
   - improve memory management,
   - add beamforming methods to compare against ICA-based source separation,
   - add GPU and cloud computing support,
   - support external tools and toolboxes that interface with EEGLAB
   including ---------
   - support development of toolboxes at both the dataset and studyset
   levels,
   - build tools allowing users to easily work between EEGLAB and R, SPSS,
and Statistica for advanced statistical processing,
   - improve EEGLAB maintenance with increased staff and improved testing
   tools,
   - continue to develop an EEGLAB user and contributor community by
developing a new EEGLAB forum website,
   - continue to support a fully functional compiled version of EEGLAB,
   - make available your lab database system, HeadIT, connected directly to
EEGLAB, that also allows users to publish their data for others' use if and
   when they wish,
   - further develop the EEGLAB tutorial wiki and Online EEGLAB Workshop,
   -

I have found the documentation you have provided with EEGLAB to be
----------.

I hope you can find support to continue to refine and develop these
materials, to keep pace with the expanding number of new functions and
concepts that are being incorporated into the EEGLAB software environment
by you and other researchers and laboratories.

Sincerely, -------------
