We are in the process of submitting a new proposal to NIH to continue its core support for EEGLAB development and maintenance for another five years and would appreciate letters of support. Based on the number of citations, as of 2021, EEGLAB is still growing faster <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://eeglab.org/others/EEGLAB_and_python.html__;!!Mih3wA!F_rvtdGbIWmHXnx2drzMamGQZZj-eP67ZBfoqk-QycbSe3MlXyxMPJyoc6OTaVAyMJV_NKG_7GtZ6DTCH-WqqB4i$ > than any other open-source software. Yet, no grant award is guaranteed. As you can imagine, letters of support are very important to our EEGLAB proposal as they show reviewers how EEGLAB is valued by the EEG research community.

NOTE: The need is urgent! We will only be able to use letters of support we receive before November 1. Letters from US institutions are most critical, but every single letter from anywhere in the world will make a difference.

In the coming renewal period, we propose work to strengthen EEGLAB core tools by building new tools (1) for high-resolution source imaging and connectivity analysis, (2) for intracranial data analysis (in particular for sEEG), and (3) for multimodal brain/behavioral data (EEG plus eye tracking, motion capture, physiological measures, video, etc.), while continuing to maintain and improve the EEGLAB code base.

For your convenience, we include a sample letter text. If you are willing, please customize it freely (at the very least, replacing all the text now in red!) and send it (in pdf or doc format) in reply to this message.

Sincerely,

Arnaud Delorme <arno at ucsd.edu>
Scott Makeig <smakeig at ucsd.edu>

Sample support letter text [please place on institution letterhead and customize freely]:

Drs. Delorme and Makeig,

I am writing to -------- support your NIH application for funding the continued development of the open-source EEGLAB environment for neuro-electrophysiological data analysis. I [and my associates----] have been using EEGLAB in [my|our] research on —------- at ---------------------- for ---------------- years and find it -------------------------. We have published results obtained using EEGLAB tools in -----[journal names]-------. EEGLAB continues to be of -------- value in our funded research projects ([project identifiers]), in particular because -----------. My students and I have found EEGLAB to be valuable for -----------------. In particular, we have found the user interface and documentation —------------- EEGLAB ----------.

I hope that the open-source development model you are promoting for EEGLAB continues to make a —--------- contribution to the development and availability of —-------- cognitive neuroscience software including --------------------. I am particularly interested in your proposed plans to ------- [here, select items below and/or mention other points]

Improve tools for high-resolution EEG, MEG, and iEEG source localization, source visualization, and source measure statistics
Add support at the study level for computing a range of connectivity measures at the group level
Add beamforming methods for comparisons with ICA-based source separation
Add support for analysis of intracranial EEG data (in particular iEEG/sEEG)
Add support for analysis of EEG/MEG/iEEG data collected synchronously with behavioral, audiovisual, psychophysiological, and other measures (the framework you refer to as Mobile Brain/Body Imaging or MoBI)
Support more fully formatting and annotating my data to increase and extend its scientific value both now and into the future.
In conclusion … I hope you will receive support to continue to refine and develop the EEGLAB environment and to maintain its ability to incorporate the ever-expanding number of new tools contributed by you at UCSD and by many other researchers and laboratories.

Sincerely, -------------
