Figure 1. Schematic time line and stimulus display for the experiment. Subjects fixated the screen center (cross, lower row), while five boxes were continuously displayed above the fixation point. During each 76-sec block of trials, one of the boxes was colored differently from the others, indicating that it was the attended stimulus location for that block. Visual stimuli (single solid disks, duration 117 msec) were briefly displayed in boxes 1 (leftmost) to 5 (rightmost) in pseudo-random order at inter-stimulus intervals of 225 msec to 1000 msec. Subjects were asked to press a right thumb button as soon as possible whenever a disk was presented in the attended location.
