You do not need to save the data in a Matlab file, using BIOSIG you are 
able to load BrainVision data into Matlab.
see SLOAD, SOPEN, SREAD, etc.

With EEGLAB you can do it
Menu: File
    (1) Import data -> (11) From other formats using BIOSIG -> select 
your BrainVisionFile
