Hello, everyone,
Reference is a very fundamental issue in scalp EEG based studies, as I know, all the previous efforts are focused on the selection of a relatively less active reference point, such as linked ears, Cz, Fcz, neck, toe etc, however they all are based on the subjective judgement of the resercher which may be different frome one to the other.
In recent years, Dr Yao designed a method to translate the actual recordings with an actual physical reference, such as Cz, uni-mastoid, to the idea recordings with reference at Infinity (zero theoretically) (REST-- reference electrode standardization technique, 2001). It has been evaluated and compared with the other common references thoroughly. According to their detailed numeric evaluation, in all cases, the best one is REST (zero), then the average reference. The linked-ears, or uni-mastord is not recommended. With my practice, REST does improve the data quality in ERP and EEG analysis. The followings are the papers showing the details.
REST is freely download and free to use, the website:
doi:10.1016/j.clinph.2010.03.056 ,or, www.neuro.uestc.edu.cn/rest
and if you have any problem in your practice, pls send e-mail to xupeng at uestc.edu.cn

Hello everyone! I wanted to ask if there's an advantage in using average reference over linked mastoids or earlobes when you are working with 19 channels and considerable levels of noise. Furthermore: can reference affect the SNR of an ERP?
Thanks again for your attention and patience.
