[Eeglablist] reference

Hi
I recorded EEG signals by Emotiv cap. Now in order to analyse the data in
EEGLAB what reference must be chosen? the average which is EEGLAB default?
I mean what is the benefit of doing this? is there any problem If I don't
do this is
I will appreciate if anyone can help me.
