In GDF, most event typ numbers are predefined or reserved, the range
from 1-255 can be used for user defined event types. You can define
user-specified events for this range, including a "name" (string) for
these events.

If your use case, might be off interested to a wider audience, we might
consider standardizing the definition of your events as well.

If this does not work within EEGlab, I can take a look at this. Please
send me all information (example data set, eeglab version, etc. ) in
order to reproduce the problem, and I'll have look at this,
