The Schools of Life and Health Science at Aston University is pleased to
announce a PhD studentship available for the project “EEG-based measures of
brain function: searching for biomarkers of wakefulness and awareness in
critically ill patients”*.*

This studentship will start in October 2018 and the successful applicant
will receive a fully-funded scholarship for three years (subject to
satisfactory progression).

The studentship funds *Home/EU tuition fees *plus a stipend of £14,777 p.a.
and is available for 3 years subject to a satisfactory progress review at
the end of the first year.

The project will involve the identification of patterns derived from the
quantitative analysis of EEG to assess and predict recovery of wakefulness
and awareness in critically ill patients with altered mental status and
disorders of consciousness. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD
student to identify patterns of EEG complexity, functional connectivity and
source configuration in relation to different types of altered mental
status where wakefulness, awareness or both are compromised during acute
encephalopathy and coma. He/she will assess the sensitivity and specificity
of the patterns and will evaluate how well these features can classify patients
by using machine learning algorithms.

# Necessary skills:

Programming skills in Matlab or Python ( or willingness to acquire them)

Good command of English (spoken and written)

# Desirable:
Experience with EEG analysis

Experience with computational/statistical modeling

Experience in scientific writing
