hello everyone,

“ Bandpass filter 1-30 Hz > Reject noisy channels > Average rereference > Epoch, baseline removal > ICA > Reject noisy ICs using MARA > Interpolate bad channels” may not be the proper choice
usually, average re-reference needs to be based on clear montage(Steven Luck's Book suggested to list the detailed channels used in average), after you rejecting some channels, no one know the deatailed channels of your average. So the proper choice should be to have a re-refernece at the end, no matter average rereference did or not in the middle.

Bandpass filter 1-30 Hz > Reject noisy channels >Average rereference > Epoch, baseline removal > ICA > Reject noisy ICs using MARA > Interpolate bad channels>Average rereference

Another choice is to use zero-reference at infinity (REST) to replace average a the end. The goal of average is to approach zero, it depends on montage, channel number and head shape, REST directly aims at zero re-reference, so the procedure may be:

Bandpass filter 1-30 Hz > Reject noisy channels >Average rereference > Epoch, baseline removal > ICA > Reject noisy ICs using MARA > Interpolate bad channels>REST ( free software can be found at: Dong L, Li F, Liu Q, Wen X, Lai Y, Xu P and Yao D (2017) MATLAB Toolboxes for Reference Electrode Standardization Technique (REST) of Scalp EEG. Front. Neurosci. 11:601. doi: 10.3389/fnins.2017.00601 )

Best wishes

> Following is my pre-processing pipeline:
> Bandpass filter 1-30 Hz > Reject noisy channels > Average rereference > Epoch, baseline removal > ICA > Reject noisy ICs using MARA > Interpolate bad channels
>
> Up till after rejecting noisy ICs, the GUI interface still shows that the Reference is "average". However, after interpolation, the Reference became "unknown". May I enquire if this is supposed to be the case or I might have done something incorrectly in the process?
