[Eeglablist] Using correlated ERP waveforms as predictors

Hi Richard. If I understand the question correctly, I think you will want to use regression approaches to estimate the shared and unique variability. I’ve attached a paper that discusses why this approach is superior to difference waves in the context of individual differences. [Difference waves can be great in many situations, but they can be problematic when looking at individual differences.]

Sorry if this question is naive/inappropriate for these lists. We are teaching ourselves ERP methods and have generated LPP amplitude data in health subjects instructed to view neutral, positive, and negative IAPS pictures manipulated on a within-subjects basis.
We are interested in using LPP response to those 3 stimulus types as predictors of various outcomes.
The 3 LPP amplitudes (Neu, Pos, Neg) are correlated (at about .70) seeming to reflect both common and unique variance components. Diagnostics such as Tolerance/VIF indicate borderline collinearity.
We are wondering about suitable alternative approaches to using these variables as predictors.
Is there a way PCA can/should be used to address the collinearity?
Or difference waveforms?
I realize we may be asking a lot here; we'd be very grateful to just be pointed in the right direction in terms of papers, book chapters, online resources, etc.
Best,
Richard

Depending on your location, it may be possible to resume EEG research soon. But you may be wondering how to perform EEG recordings safely before the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.
We are therefore creating a protocol for reducing COVID-19 transmission risk in EEG research. Our goal is to reduce the risks so that they are comparable to the risks people will face in their daily lives (e.g., when visiting the grocery store or getting a haircut).
A draft protocol is now available for public comment. We have already consulted with several neurologists who have experience with clinical EEG recordings. We are now seeking feedback from the worldwide EEG community.
If you have useful suggestions for improvement, please leave a comment on our web site by June 5. But please read the whole protocol first.
You can access the protocol and leave comments here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://erpinfo.org/blog/2020/5/27/covid-protocol-draft__;!!Mih3wA!S1OK-6IKhkPcLqQB4cnztQmXxkeUaRT34MyDbZ17nD62dz0Hle_t2z_3t9ssZFMihVF9DA$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Ferpinfo.org*2Fblog*2F2020*2F5*2F27*2Fcovid-protocol-draft&data=02*7C01*7Ccontrada*40psych.rutgers.edu*7Cb7e0c363d4ee427c569e08d803ff8a02*7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe*7C1*7C0*7C637263743373729182&sdata=3LGh7rRNSdqLUGahG6IdJcZs7LFf90wH5a*2B1HT37pGQ*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUl!!Mih3wA!S1OK-6IKhkPcLqQB4cnztQmXxkeUaRT34MyDbZ17nD62dz0Hle_t2z_3t9ssZFNkaQfpxA$ >. Please do not send comments via email.
We will then create an updated protocol and make it available freely on Protocol Exchange<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fprotocolexchange.researchsquare.com*2F&data=02*7C01*7Ccontrada*40psych.rutgers.edu*7Cb7e0c363d4ee427c569e08d803ff8a02*7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe*7C1*7C0*7C637263743373729182&sdata=PlZaj3VFFPYwml*2Bq1fubgMEePUPqWgMPhy3JpLdOhls*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSU!!Mih3wA!S1OK-6IKhkPcLqQB4cnztQmXxkeUaRT34MyDbZ17nD62dz0Hle_t2z_3t9ssZFMzTXEIhw$ > You can then adapt this protocol to reflect your local conditions and regulatory environment.
Note that this protocol is for research, not for clinical practice. The current version is for adult subjects who do not exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms. But it would be a good starting point for research with other populations.
We are not implying that you should resume EEG recordings at this time. This depend on your local conditions and the rules imposed by your institution and your local, regional, and national governing bodies.
However, once it is ethical and allowable for you to resume research, we hope that this protocol will help you conduct your research in a way that is safe for both laboratory personnel and research participants.
