Dear Friend,
We are very pleased to share with you TCCI’s latest news and research released over the last few months in our summer newsletter below.
You’ll see a couple of firsts for us with the mention of the inaugural Chen Institute Brain & Mind Lecture held at the California Academy of Sciences in April this year and the introduction of the Chen Science Writers Fellowship, a program aimed at supporting young scientists and extending the conversation occurring at science meetings.
We are also proud to outline the growing number of scientific meetings we supported in the first part of the year. A full list of the events we’re supporting in 2022 can be found here (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cheninstitute.org/newsroom/meetings?fType=337__;!!Mih3wA!DHsicN496USXx_tqBa3HqxCSPKTegD00S8x_tM6OXRjtdWVahJZqkRieMiruZtfYGf2Go_gIZ_peUbRrJ4n__tGErxO1$ ) .
We hope you find this interesting and as always, we thank you for your friendship and support.

TCCI Investigators, Professor Yang Zhi and Professor Yuan Tifei from the Mental Health Center affiliated with Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and other co-authors recently published the first growth curve model of brain development in children aged one to six years old. The model carefully maps the structural changes of the brain during the golden phase of growth and presents an individualized growth status assessment method for children.

New Insights into the Neuroscience Behind Conscious Awareness of Choice

A new study from the laboratory of Richard Andersen, James G. Boswell Professor of Neuroscience, and Leadership Chair and Director of the T&C Chen Brain–Machine Interface Center, gives new insights into how the brain encodes for our choices about movement. The research indicates that brain activity of abstract high-level choices (such as the desire to consume more coffee) connects to the actual actions (such as reaching out a hand) even before the awareness of such choices to move.

Decoding Movement and Speech from the Brain of a Tetraplegic Person

Neuroscientists in Richard Andersen’s lab are studying how the brain encodes movements and speech, in order to potentially restore these functions to those individuals who have lost them due to accidents or neurological disease. New research from the lab has identified a region of the brain that codes for both grasping movements and speech—indicating a promising region for the implantation of more efficient BMIs that can control multiple types of prosthetics in both the grasp and speech domains.
