The Language, Intersensory Perception, and Speech (LIPS) lab of Dr. Alexandra Jesse at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for Ph.D. positions in Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, starting in Fall 2024.

The goal of Dr. Jesse’s research is to understand how humans recognize speech sounds and spoken words. A particular focus is on speech recognition in face-to-face communication, when listeners use information obtained from hearing and seeing the talker to recognize speech. Using both behavioral (e.g., eye tracking) and neuropsychological methods (EEG/ERP), Dr. Jesse’s research also investigates the underlying mechanisms of how listeners cope with variability in speech and adjust to talkers. A third line of research examines whether and how perceptual (e.g., hearing) and cognitive factors (e.g., attention, working memory) play a role in speech recognition and can hence explain individual differences in aging.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Psychology or other related fields (e.g., Cognitive Science; Linguistics; Neuroscience; Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences). The candidate should have a strong interest in the research topics of the lab and excellent communication skills. Experience with experimental research is preferred. Prior experience with EEG/ERP is of advantage.
