3-year PhD student position, project on human memory and neural
networks, University of Muenster, Germany

My lab at the Institute of Psychology, University of Muenster, Germany,
is currently looking for a doctoral student in an innovative research
project that explores the intersection of computer vision and cognitive
psychology. This 3-year Position is funded by a research grant from the
German Research Council (DFG).

# Project summary:
Why are some events still remembered after a long time while others are
quickly forgotten? Psychological research has shown that for simple
stimuli, such as letters or numbers, the memorability of an event is
determined by the extent to which its features are distinct from those
of other events. In this project, we will investigate whether the
memorability of complex photographs is also determined by their
distinctiveness. To this end, we will analyze photographs using deep
neural network models to objectively quantify their features and analyze
their distinctiveness from other images. In this international project,
we will address long-standing questions in cognitive psychology in
collaboration with our project Partners, Filip Děchtěrenko and Jiří
Lukavský, at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague: What makes an
image memorable and how do representations in neural networks differ
from those in human memory?

Furthermore, we offer the opportunity to participate in other ongoing
research projects in the lab, mostly in the areas of visual cognition
and psychophysics, visual short- and long-term memory, and neuronal
oscillations. Further information about the lab’s research, publications
and members can be found here:

# Requirements
In short, candidates should hold a master’s degree in psychology,
neuroscience, or a related field and have expertise in experimental
psychology, psychophysics, or computer vision. You will collaborate with
an amazing international team, work in a friendly and inspiring lab
environment, and live in an awesome city!

# Formalities
The formal application deadline is August 19, 2024, but later
applications are considered until the position is filled. The earliest
starting date is November 2024, but later dates are also possible.

The detailed job ad is available here:
