Hi Nick,
I highly recommend reading the bit in Steve Luck's book on referencing:
http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=10677
It does a great job covering the pros and cons of different common
references (including the average reference and bimastoid).
The rest of the book is well worth reading too.
