Belonging to others is a basic human need expressed in any social
relationship. As a consequence, being excluded, neglected, or rejected by
others is a negative experience with many different short- and long-term
consequences.



Research about ostracism, social exclusion, and rejection has undergone
tremendous growth in the last 10 to 15 years. There is now considerable
empirical evidence about subjective, physiological, and behavioral
correlates and consequences of being rejected or excluded. Models have been
postulated and new assessment methods have been tested for furthering our
understanding of social exclusion and rejection. For example, there are
neurophysiological studies linking rejection to pain experiences or
behavioral studies using eye-tracking methodologies.



While there is a tremendous interest in research on ostracism, social
exclusion, and rejection, there is a need for bridging research from
different disciplines. These include, but are not limited to, psychology,
physiology, neuroscience, public health, sociology, economics, and
political science.



This special issue on ostracism, social exclusion, and rejection will  bring
together research on the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of
ostracism, social exclusion, and rejection from different fields.
