Hi !

I am quite new in EEGLAB and I’m not good at programming! I have been trying for months to get basic data related to the presence and the duration of each of the following wavebands (Gama, Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta).

My question is the following: From a 10 sec EEG resting state recording, taken from only one electrode, is there an easy way, through EEGLAB plug-ins or extensions, to get data related to the presence and the duration of each of the following wavebands (Gama, Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta).

While it has been for me easy to understand and to get the power spectrum data for each waveband, I am still unable to find the way to obtain the presence and the duration of each of these wavebands.

What is my project ?

I want to replicate John ERTL’s research methodology in his 1978 United States Patent (4,092,981) untitled « METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR BRAIN WAVEFORM EXAMINATION » https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://patents.google.com/patent/US4092981__;!!Mih3wA!VDM0muxNl3Jbbkm7EzWxRBZmC0n5UuP4lwR_LODyeKLTjkiSSx-yD9PbIHOa7fvqwDL8Rg$ . I know that this research approach is outdated but I want to replicate it in my own perspective.

By this US patent, John ERTL Ottawa university professor, measures a « Neural efficiency rating» by :
·         amplifying and band-limiting an EEG waveform of a subject;
·         discarding those parts of the waveform during which alpha rhythm is present, and;
· measuring the « average frequency » of the remainder of the waveform.

 Thus the desired « average frequency » which is utilized as a measure of brain function or neural efficiency may be expressed by the formula:
(N — Na)/(P — Na.aP) where :
·         P : is the duration in seconds of a timed portion of an EEG waveform being analyzed;
·         N : is the number of cycles as delimited by the alternate zero crossings in that portion of waveform, after band limiting;
· Na : is the number of such cycles occurring during the presence of alpha rhythm, as determined by identifying alternate zero crossings separated by
          periods; characteristic of alpha rhythm, and;
· aP : is the average periodicity of an alpha event.

As well described in the US patent (1978), ERTL obtained theses data by using an oscilloscope.

So, at first, I really thought it would be easy to get these basic data with our modern technology!

Your help will be so appreciated,

Many many thanks,

Real
