With more than 7,000 employees in research, teaching and administration
and a student body of 29,000, TU Dortmund University shapes prospects
for the future. The university's unique profile of cooperation between
engineering and science and social and cultural studies drives technical
innovation as well as progress in knowledge and methodology, benefiting
the individual student and society as a whole.
The Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors
(/IfADo /--Leibniz-Institut für Arbeitsforschung an der TU Dortmund) is
an institute of the Leibniz Association (Leibniz- Gemeinschaft, WGL).
Its mission is basic and applied research to foster human health,
safety, and capabilities at work. Its interdisciplinary organization is
fitted to this purpose, with toxicology, immunology, ergonomics and
psychology as major academic disciplines.
The /IfADo/, together with TU Dortmund University, invites applications
for a
W3 Professorship in Experimental and Occupational Psychology and/or
Neuroscience
to begin on the 1^st of April 2014.
Our institute aims at strengthening the understanding of processes and
mechanisms of human goal directed behavior in the working environment. A
strong research program addressing biological and/or psychological
determinants and effects of human behavior or human movement in the
occupational context, possibly complemented with modeling approaches
(e.g. animal models, computational models), would be particularly
welcome. We are looking for scientists with an outstanding and
internationally recognized track record of research in disciplines such
as Cognitive or Behavioral Neurosciences, Human Movement Sciences,
Psychology, or related areas. Successful experience in external grant
funding is required. Candidates should have a concept and the
capabilities to apply basic research to challenges of modern working
environments and should be interested in interdisciplinary research
integrating our major academic disciplines immunology, toxicology/cell
sciences, and ergonomics. Experience in translational research is highly
appreciated. The professorship is associated with the position of a
scientific director at the institute. The successful candidate will
receive excellent research conditions in an interdisciplinary environment.
Whereas the research is based at /IfADo/, contributions to teaching
students at the TU Dortmund are expected.
Preconditions for employment are specified in §36 HG of the state of
NRW. Applicants are expected to have an excellent scientific record,
which has been obtained as a junior professor, within the context of a
/Habilitation/, or through another scientific position.
/IfADo/and TU Dortmund University arestriving to increase the percentage
of women in science and therefore encourages women to apply.
Disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given
preference.
/IfADo/and TU Dortmund University support the compatibility of family
and work and promotes gender equality in science. TU Dortmund University
is a family-friendly university and has been awarded the certificate
/audit familiengerechte Hochschule/.
Applications with the usual documents (including CV, list of
publications, summary of current and past grant funding, list of
teaching activities and evaluations and a research concept) should be
sent no later than Sept. 15th, 2013, to
Prof. Carsten Watzl,

The professorship will be well funded and equipped and is associated
with the position of a scientific director at our institute. The
institute is prepared to allocate a significant amount of space (at
least 400 m^2 ) and personnel for the professorship. Currently, a total
of 10 positions are associated with the professorship, of which 3
scientist-positions and 1 position for technical personnel can be
staffed upon appointment. Additionally, the new professor will have
access to an excellent infrastructure, which is shared by the other
working groups at the institute (Ergonomics, headed by Prof. Edmund
Wascher; Toxicology, headed by Prof. Jan Hengstler; Immunology, headed
by Prof. Carsten Watzl): Besides different highly established EEG-Labs,
the evolving "Human-Machine Interaction Lab" provides the opportunity to
simulate various working environments and to investigate participants by
numerous measures such as EEG, EMG, NIRS or motion tracking. For all
these measurements the institute also possesses mobile equipment.
Additionally, the basics for virtual reality and driving simulators of
different complexity are available. Other resources include confocal and
multi-photon laser scanning microscopes, LC-MS, multi-laser FACS
analyzer and sorter, fluorescence time-lapse video microscopy, calcium
imaging, cell culture facilities, including biosafety levels S1 and S2,
and a small animal facility for mice and rats.
Important for a successful application are excellent research activities
in the fields of experimental Psychology or Neuroscience, that are
dealing with the biological and/or psychological basis of human
behavior. While excellent research and an outstanding publication record
are the most important criteria, the candidate should provide a concept
how such basic research could be translated and applied to the mission
of our institute (occupational research). Ideally, such a concept would
highlight possible connections to other disciplines present at our
institute such as ergonomics, toxicology/cell biology and/or immunology.
Applicants who are mostly focused on basic research should not be
discouraged by these specifications. It is our experience with previous
appointments that with the help of the generous institutional support
basic researchers can successfully establish additional applied research
projects. If you are uncertain about the possible application of your
line of research to the occupational context or if you have any
questions about the focus of our institute, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
