The Army Research Laboratory’s Translational Neuroscience Branch in
collaboration with the Sensors and Bioinspired Controls group seeks to
enable revolutionary advances in human-autonomy integration. Our approach
combines modern neuroscience with novel, distributed control system
architectures, computer science and engineering to create a generalized
framework that capitalizes on human and autonomy abilities while
compensating for their limitations.

In service of this goal, we are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to work
as a part of a multi-disciplinary team including US Army Research
Laboratory, US Air Force Research Laboratory, DCS Corporation and Columbia
University.

The successful applicant will work with the Translational Neuroscience and
Sensors and Bioinspired Controls groups to 1) develop automated methods for
extracting human states from human physiological data, 2) incorporate human
state information with autonomous system generated state information to
develop joint state estimates, and 3) utilize the individual and joined
state information within control system to optimize state prediction and
system performance. The successful applicant is expected to also contribute
intellectually to other Translational Neuroscience and Sensors and
Bioinspired Controls research projects. The successful applicant is
expected to robustly publish in scientific journals and present their
findings at international topical conferences.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent degree) in Neuroscience,
Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls and Dynamic Systems,
Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace
Engineering, or Probability and Statistics with a strong background and
demonstrable experience in at least one of these topics: brain-computer
interface, machine-learning methods, multisensor integration for human
state monitoring, statistics and probability, control systems, autonomy.
Additional desired skills include: MATLAB-based analyses, EEG analysis,
applied mathematics, Bayesian process, joint estimation, state estimation,
machine learning, neuroscience, programming (C++, C#, Python, etc),
embedded systems, distributed systems, dynamics and control, brain computer
interface, human-robot interaction, autonomous systems, multi-sensor state
estimation, hardware integration and micro-controller experience, modeling
and simulation experience, and strong written and presentation skills.

Please note that all jobs with the Department of Defense require US
citizenship and do not allow contractors to hold dual citizenship.
Postdoctoral Fellows must also be able to obtain secret level security
clearance.

ARL is committed to hiring a diverse workforce of world-class researchers
and all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply. Position includes
competitive salary, health care, and travel for conferences/collaboration.
Position is one year with potential for extension. Specific salary depends
on degree discipline and years since degree conferred; healthcare benefits
and conference/collaboration travel will be included in addition to annual
salary.

Location: Army Research Laboratory - Adelphi Laboratory Center (Adelphi,
MD) 50%
Army Research Laboratory - Aberdeen Proving Grounds (Aberdeen, MD) 50%
The locations are approximately 1 hour apart in the Greater
Baltimore-Washington D.C. area, and it is anticipated that the successful
applicant will spend half of his/her time at each location.
